Mouse Diseases

One good reason for getting rid of any mice in your house is mouse diseases. Mice have been known to be carriers of many diseases which are harmful to humans. In this article we will look at the different diseases mice can carry, as well as the way they have been transmitted to humans.

Mice Diseases

Bubonic Plague- Although mice do not carry plague as often as rats do, they have been known to carry it.  Plague is extremely dangerous and it can be fatal with in days. It is carried by mice, rats and other rodents in many parts of the world

Salmonellosis – This is a bacterial food disease caused when food is contaminated with infected rodent species. If your home has mice and you leave food lying around, then it could be a problem.

Rickettsialpox – This is a disease which causes chills, fever, aches and rashes. It is caused by a bacteria often living on house mice.

Leptospirosis-  A group of infectious diseases transmitted by contact with infected animal urine, mice included. It is caused by spirochetes of the genus Leptospira.

Tulmeria- A disease which can cause swelling of the lymph nodes and fever. It is transmitted through the bite of various animals, including mice.

That is just some of the many diseases mice can carry and it is one of the best reasons why you should never allow your home to become infested with house mice.

How Diseases are transmitted to humans

Diseases carried by mice can be transmitted to humans in a variety of ways, including:

  • Biting
  • Infection of food with mice droppings
  • Infection of food with mice urine
  • Human wounds infected with mouse urine
  • By blood-sucking insects who bite mice and pass to humans;
  • By mites indirectly
  • By cat or dog indirectly
  • By mice dying in our drinking source
